The scholarship is named in memory of Vern Williams, a former member of the Early Riser Kiwanis Club who is well-remembered for his portrayal of James P. Beckwourth during the Beckwourth Frontier Days in Riverfront Park. Vern’s untimely death spurred the club to do something in remembrance of his love for youth and his desire to help them enjoy a happy and successful life. The club’s annual Brews, Blues and Barbeque event is the source of the funding and most recently, the first annual Early Riser Kiwanis Old Fashioned Family Fish Fry, whose proceeds will serve students wishing to pursue a vocational education, rather than attending college. This year, the Brews, Blues and Barbeque event will be held at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds, Saturday, September 14, 2013 with all proceeds benefiting the scholarship program.
